"The Veil does not exist to keep worlds apart. It exists to keep them in balance."
Long before kingdoms rose and long before mortals recorded history, there stood a boundary older than time itself.
It was called The Veil.
Invisible to mortal eyes, the Veil separates the Physical Realm from the Spirit Realm. It is neither a wall nor a prison, but a living boundary woven from ancient magic and maintained by those chosen to protect it.
At its center stands Lira.
She is not a queen.
She is not a goddess.
She is the Guardian of the Veil.
Lira does not interfere in the affairs of mortals. Kingdoms rise and fall without her judgment. Wars are fought. Empires crumble. Heroes become legends.
The lives of mortals belong to mortals.
Likewise, the politics of the Spirit Realm belong to spirits.
Only when the balance between the two worlds is threatened does Lira act.
For thousands of years, the Physical Realm has posed little danger. Mortals have looked toward the heavens with curiosity, reverence, and wonder. They tell stories of spirits around their fires and leave offerings to ancestors, but few have ever sought to cross the Veil itself.
The greater threat has always come from the other side.
There are spirits who believe the Physical Realm should be ruled by beings far older and more powerful than humanity. Time and again, ambitious spirit lords have sought to weaken the Veil, hoping to extend their influence into the world of the living.
Every invasion has failed.
Every breach has been sealed.
Because Lira and her Guardians stood in their way.
Lira was born to Pange and Xiyan, legendary Guardians of the Veil whose names are still spoken with reverence among those who protect the boundary.
The Guardians are not immortal in the way mortals imagine.
They cannot be killed by ordinary weapons or by any being of the Physical Realm.
Only those of the Spirit Realm possess the power to Ascend a Guardian.
Ascension is not death.
It is a sacred passing from one form of existence into another.
Some Guardians ascend in battle.
Others, after centuries of service, willingly surrender their duty to a worthy successor before joining the Ancestors.
Lira's mother, Pange, ascended defending the Veil during one of the greatest wars ever fought against the Spirit Realm.
Her sacrifice became legend.
After her passing, Xiyan raised Lira alone.
He loved his daughter deeply, but he carried another love that never faded—the longing to be reunited with Pange.
He never hid that truth from Lira.
One evening, while they stood overlooking the Veil, he told her:
"Do not mistake my wish to leave as a desire to leave you. My heart has simply lived in two worlds ever since your mother ascended."
Lira understood.
From that day forward, she trained harder than any Guardian before her.
Not because she sought glory.
Not because she feared battle.
Because she knew every lesson mastered brought her father one step closer to the peace he had earned.
She grew into a warrior long before she was old enough to be one.
Every bruise…
Every failure…
Every victory…
Was another promise kept.
When Xiyan finally looked upon his daughter and saw not a child, but the Guardian she was destined to become, he smiled.
"I have nothing left to teach you."
Lira nodded, though her heart broke.
She knew what those words meant.
The next dawn, Xiyan laid down his staff.
He placed his hand upon the Veil one final time.
And before the rising sun, he ascended to join the woman he had waited centuries to see again.
For the first time in history…
The Veil belonged to Lira alone.
