Kingdom of Maari

"Magic is not ours to command. It is ours to protect."

Hidden deep within the Emerald Forest lies Maari, the most mysterious of the Five Kingdoms.
Many believe it is only a legend.
Travelers wander its forests for weeks without ever finding it.
Some claim the trees move.
Others swear the paths change.
The people of Maari simply smile.
"The forest decides who is ready."
Unlike the other kingdoms, Maari has never sought recognition.
Its people live quietly among towering trees, crystal rivers, glowing flowers, and ancient ruins older than recorded history.
They are the Guardians of Ancient Magic, protecting the oldest mysteries of Nduara.
"Magic serves life. Never power."
The people of Maari are born with the rare ability to perceive and commune with the invisible currents of living magic that flow throughout Nduara.
They do not create magic.
They guide it.
Just as a river can be redirected but never owned.
Every spell, blessing, enchantment, or healing begins by asking permission from the Living Essence.
Magic refuses arrogance.
It answers humility.
The Ancient Orders
Rather than everyone practicing the same discipline, the people of Maari dedicate themselves to different paths.
The Verdant Weavers
Masters of healing.
They encourage wounds to mend naturally, purge illness, and help forests recover after fire or disease.
The Keepers of Light
Protective mages who create wards, barriers, and sanctuaries.
They preserve balance rather than wage war.
The Whisperbinders
Able to communicate with ancient trees, rivers, stones, and the oldest spirits of the forest.
The Star Readers
Astronomers and scholars who study the movements of celestial bodies to better understand the rhythms of magic.
The people of Maari value patience above all else.
Children spend years learning to observe before they attempt their first spell.
Many apprentices never become masters.
Not because they lack talent.
Because wisdom cannot be rushed.
The oldest mages often appear surprisingly ordinary.
Power is rarely announced.
Flowing robes woven from forest fibers.
Deep greens.
Emerald.
Moss.
Silver.
Soft blues.
Living vines and embroidered leaves decorate ceremonial garments.
Crystals and carved wooden talismans are worn not as ornaments but as tools for focusing magic.
Nothing in Maari is built against nature.
Homes grow around giant trees.
Bridges are woven from living roots.
Libraries are carved into ancient trunks.
Temples stand beneath waterfalls hidden by vines.
At night, glowing flowers and bioluminescent fungi illuminate the forest.
Visitors often describe the kingdom as if the forest itself were dreaming.
At the heart of Maari grows the First Tree.
No one knows how old it is.
The people believe every tree in Nduara descends from its roots.
It is said the First Tree stood before the kingdoms were founded.
Before kings.
Before maps.
Perhaps even before the Veil.
Ashango shares its wisdom with Maari.
Maari shares its healing with Ashango.
Lokmane receives protective enchantments before each new generation stands the Watch.
Tajiri trades rare desert plants for medicinal herbs.
Kina depends upon Maari's magical wards to protect important ports and waterways.
Most believe Maari protects magic.
The truth is more unsettling.
Maari protects where magic was born.
Beneath the First Tree lies an ancient source known only as The Heartroot.
It is not an object.
It is not a crystal.
It is a living wellspring from which the Living Essence first flowed into the world.
The Heartroot feeds every enchanted forest, every sacred grove, every blessed spring, and every place where ancient magic still lingers.
Should it ever become corrupted...
Magic across Nduara would begin to wither.
Healers would lose their gifts.
Protective wards would fail.
Sacred places would become ordinary.
Even the Veil itself could weaken, for while it is not sustained by the Heartroot, the ancient balance of Nduara depends upon both enduring together.
Only the eldest guardians of Maari know the Heartroot exists.
Even many of their own people believe the stories are only myth.
No army has ever conquered Maari.
Not because its warriors are the strongest.
But because the forest refuses to betray its protectors.
The trees close forgotten paths.
Mist rolls in without warning.
Roots rise where roads once lay.
Travelers who come with peaceful hearts often find the kingdom.
Those who come with greed may wander for days, only to emerge exactly where they began.
The elders simply say:
"The forest is not hiding from you. It is deciding whether you belong."
